DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the tremendous\, amazing\, Big Asheville Science Salon! \nAugust 6th: Accounting Appalachia\nInventorying Biodiversity in the Great Smoky Mountains with forest biologist Glenn Taylor.   \nMedieval scholars pondered “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” Though that has yet to be resolved\, if we assume a typical pinhead of 1.5-millimeter diameter\, we can say the answer is exactly zero racoons. Or more than one million average-sized bacteria. Science! \n            A more vital question\, though\, is how many species (dancing or otherwise) are in a particular area? Despite how much we think we know about our planet\, research models suggest only about 15% of species have been identified. With the current decline in biodiversity\, that means we are losing organisms we don’t even know exist! And that is very\, very not cool. \n            More than 25 years ago\, researchers at Great Smoky Mountains National Park initiated an All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI)\, with the goal of documenting every species there. Counting organisms (and not just the big\, sexy ones) provides much more than a catalogue – it offers insight to an ecosystem’s functioning\, assessment of its biodiversity\, and valuable data for research and conservation. To date\, the Smokies ATBI\, managed by Discover Life in America in coordination with the National Park Service\, has added more than 11\,000 species records for the park\, including more than 1\,000 species that are new to science! Estimates suggest as many as 50\,000 more are yet to be discovered – so get your boots on and start looking! \nAt the August salon\, stand and be counted (or sit and be cryptic – it’s totally your call) with forest biologist Glenn Taylor. Raised in Staten Island\, New York’s forgotten borough\, Glenn was a motorcycle mechanic until the hum of pistons surrendered to the call of the wild. Trading his wrenches for a degree at Penn State\, he spent five years as an entomology and plant pathology technician before joining the National Park Service as a forest biologist. Starting at Shenandoah National Park\, Glenn migrated down the Blue Ridge to the Great Smoky Mountains where he spent the next decades focusing on forest pest management. He also bakes. \nOur mission: Cultivate curiosity and build community by sharing the coolest\, grooviest\, and fascinating-ist scientific discoveries. And have a beer (or wine or soda). \nHow it do: Each month\, a bona fide expert takes us on a thrill ride of science awesomeness (i.e.\, talk about their research and probably show pretty pictures). The best way to understand people is to listen to them.” – Ralph G. Nichols \n “If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening\, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.” – Winnie-the-Pooh (A. A. Milne) \nAhh\, science – valiant researchers pursuing knowledge with dogged focus\, profoundly changing how we see the world. Scientific exploration is\, at its core\, seeking understanding. Look closer\, dig deeper\, analyze more … analytically. \nSomehow\, the majority of studies manage without ever asking their subjects for input. It’s reasonable\, perhaps\, not to ask the remipedes why they seek shadows\, or to assume we know best how to calculate the orbits of moons and typhoons. But trying to understand humans (a notoriously confusing species) without involving those humans seems … silly. \nAt the September salon\, explore community-based participatory research (CBPR)\, a collaborative approach in which researchers engage community members as partners\, and how it leads to better science. Our presenters will share their use of CBPR in developing and evaluating interventions for improving health outcomes for marginalized communities in Appalachia\, specifically populations enduring higher rates of HIV\, sexually transmitted infections (STIs)\, and hepatitis C. \nJohn Chaffin is the Community Health Worker Coordinator at the Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP)\, serving communities across 18\, primarily rural counties. John leads client-centered navigation services\, overcoming barriers (both geographic and social) to connect people living with HIV to medical care\, housing support\, legal assistance\, and other essential resources. \nDr. Scott Rhodes is Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine\, where he chairs the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy. For three decades\, Dr. Rhodes has focused on improving health outcomes in populations that experience disproportionately high disease burdens. Scott has championed and advanced community-based participatory research (CBPR) at local and global levels by developing\, implementing\, evaluating\, and refining a remarkable number of intervention projects. \nDoors open at 5:00. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the tremendous\, amazing\, Big Asheville Science Salon! \nOctober:\nThe Sound and the Furry with evolutionary biologist Dr. James Fuller. \n \nWhat is the sound of one hand clapping? \nUmmm … beats me. Maybe some kind of whoosh? \nIt is easier\, perhaps\, to characterize the sound of a scream\, a sigh\, or a moan. We might feel we “understand” a lion’s roar\, a wolf’s growl\, or the pigeons’ hypnotic cooing\, even without consulting our trusty translator apps. But do we really understand these sounds or do we just assign “meaning” based on how they make us feel? \nVocal signals play key roles in how many animals – from toads to turkeys\, emus to elk – manage the absurdly complex interactions that come with being social. Elephants emit infrasonic (below 20 Hz) rumbles\, mice make ultrasonic (above 20\,000 Hz) squeaks\, and whales do whatever you want to call whale noises (“song” seems a little human-centric\, don’t ya think?). To make sense of animal communication\, we must first consider that\, unlike symbolic language\, vocal signals evolved because they have an innate effect on listeners. So\, how do we explain why some sounds evoke a reflexive dread while others seem to soothe our savage beasts? \nAt the October salon\, join evolutionary biologist and behavioral ecologist Dr. James Fuller to explore how sound waves\, anatomy\, neural pathways\, and natural selection shape animal vocal signals. Dr. Fuller has studied the behavior of African primates for nearly three decades\, with field research in Congo\, Kenya\, Rwanda\, and Uganda. His research examines the evolution of social behavior\, with a focus on the development of vocal communication systems. James is a member of the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology and an adjunct professor at Columbia University and also Mars Hill University. He reckons that curiosity is key to most things that matter\, that questions are vastly more interesting than answers\, and that he knows a lot less than he lets on. \nDoors at 5:00 PM. Here\, clinging to craggy ledges and overhangs\, lichens\, mosses\, and cliff-adapted plants are living large (well … mostly small)\, having evolved extraordinary mechanisms for surviving in thin soils and harsh microclimates. These towering\, vertical landscapes function as refuges for rare species and also as model systems for understanding disturbance\, diversity\, and resilience in a changing world. \nThe November salon will be a literal cliffhanger! Join lichenologist and cliff ecologist Dr. Laura Boggess to explore the elusive ecosystems that cling to rock faces. Dr. Boggess’ work focuses on lichen and other often overlooked organisms that dwell on stoney precipices that most rational beings would try to avoid. Laura is a professor at Mars Hill University\, where her research integrates ecosystem science and conservation to unlock the mysteries of ecologically essential symbionts and what they can teach us about resilience\, adaptation\, and life on the rocks. \nDoors at 5:00 PM.
